Flocabulary Supports Turnaround Arts Efforts to Improve Struggling Schools Through Arts-Based Learning
November 6, 2017—Brooklyn, NY—Brooklyn-based ed tech company Flocabulary announces a donation of its hip-hop learning platform to 28 high-needs schools across the country through a new partnership with national arts-based learning organization Turnaround Arts. Though these donations, all teachers, staff and students at recipient schools will have access to Flocabulary’s standards-based videos, instructional activities and student creativity tools.
"Flocabulary has always been committed to reaching and impacting students at high-need schools, and Turnaround Arts makes that possible through their dedication to not only distributing resources, but also ensuring success through close management and partnership," said Flocabulary CEO Alex Rappaport. "Teaching through music and the arts transforms classrooms and unlocks student potential. We’re thrilled to partner with Turnaround Arts to bring the arts to more schools across the nation."
Led by the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts, Turnaround Arts has infused arts education programs, arts integration, supplies and musical instruments into 73 high-need elementary and middle schools nationwide. An evaluation of the eight Turnaround Arts pilot schools found on average schools showed improvement in academic achievement, reduction in disciplinary referrals in five of eight schools, and increases in attendance in four of eight schools.
"As our schools begin their journey in Turnaround Arts, we watch classrooms and learning throughout the curriculum transform in creative, new, engaging ways," said Kathy Fletcher, National Director of Turnaround Arts. "Flocabulary’s method of using music, and hip-hop in particular, to help students master academic content while building core literacy skills is sure to resonate with our students and teachers across the country."
Flocabulary’s donations are part of a new corporate social responsibility initiative for the company, which is committed to providing in-kind product donations to support students in high-need learning environments. The donations will reach students in Bridgeport, CT, Washington, DC, Broward County, FL, Waianae, HI, Chicago, IL, New Orleans, LA, Des Moines, IA, Minneapolis and St. James, MN, Providence, RI, and Flocabulary’s hometown, Brooklyn, NY.
Flocabulary is a learning program for all grades that uses educational hip-hop music to engage students and increase achievement across the curriculum. Teachers at 20,000 schools use Flocabulary’s standards-based videos, instructional activities and student creativity tools to supplement instruction and develop core literacy skills.
